Jobs? What Jobs?

It remains a mystery to me that our government can point out the excess profits that they believe the oil companies are making and yet produce an annual budget request of $3.1 Trillion for 2008.

Americans are totally incensed by the oil company’s profits, yet seem oblivious to government spending. Why is that? Apparently only the Shadow knows. The Shadow, and me that is, and I’m going to tell you that secret.

Everyone in the U.S. is on, or will be on, the government dole. Yes, me to. Even though we paid in to it, Social Security and Medicare are doled back out by our fine managers in government. We drive on the highways and who hands out highway funds? We are threatened by foreign nations and who protects us? Who doles out money for education?

So when government is asked to cut back…what do they say? “Cutting taxes will affect your Social Security, National Security, Healthcare and Education. Cutting back oil company profits will make your life better.”

The above example is similar to asking a beef rancher if red meat is bad for you or a real estate agent if he recommends selling your own home. It’s called a conflict of interest.

Government could cut back by hundreds of billions in areas that we would never notice, but those aren’t the areas that are used as examples because they wouldn’t directly negatively influence the general public. They would however negatively influence the company that financed your Congresspersons last campaign.

Tax collection is what keeps this well oiled machine that we call government running smoothly. An interruption in tax collection is not a good thing for our fearless leaders and isn’t included in the grand scheme of things. In other words, there is no plan “B.”

Similar to the Titanic, the U.S. can’t sink so why provide life boats? And similar to the Titanic, the designers of America’s economic underpinnings got it all wrong. They planned on exponential growth (ever expanding), for…well, forever. Never mind that it was impossible. Don’t muddy our mission up with facts.

Continual growth in tax collection is without a doubt necessary to fund all of the debt that our government has seen fit to put on the cuff. But is infinite growth in tax collection possible?

This is a great time for a Mikeronomics quiz. Late next month, May of 2008, some 3.1 million students will graduate from High School and at the same time, 1.37 million will graduate from college. Also at the same time, 899,000 students will have dropped out of high school during 2008. What do these 5,369,000 people have in common?

Absolutely; they all want a new car. And, you all got it right; they also want a job.

I just reported last week that in the previous 90 days, 772,000 people were either laid off or failed to find work. Jobs, it seems, are on permanent backorder.

So here is the burning question: What do you think the chances are of 5.3 million people going to work in the near term? Wait! Before you answer that, did I tell you that on average 125,000 immigrants enter the U.S. looking for work each and every month?

So what’s your answer to the quiz? “Sweet Mother of Jesus,” is not an acceptable answer.

Wake up Middle America, our leaders lost their compass some time back.

Hi Mike,
I don’t have the numbers in front of me, but, the big winner in the gas price increase is our uncle. No work - no risk, just take a large percentage right off the top. Makes you wonder what incentive there is for lowering prices.

I heard some numbers thown around on some weekend news show that the size of government has grown 40% over the last 8 years. All the more reason to write in Ron Paul in November.

Larry,

What a good observation…most taxes are paid as a percentage of sales, income, profits etc. with no cap! When prices go up, taxes go up.

So why is inflation good for government? more taxes for the same services.

So what is the incentive of a government that exists on taxes to curtail consumer prices?

The answer is of course that higher prices are good for government every time and all the time right up to the time…that the golden goose is dead.

Hi Mike
Todays article makes a lot of sense. It reminds me of when my Dad who was raising 7 kids and a dog on $25 a week, if there was work. Then along came the “new deal” and world war two. The patriotic thing to do was to buy war bonds. For us we got 10 cents a month each to buy a stamp and save it toward a $18.75 war bond that in 10 YEARS would be worth $25 . They never told you the plan was by then it would only be worth maybe 10 bucks. So you just gave the government at least $8.75. Looks like their still giving the worker the “shaft” . However I do think many of us have received the “wake up call”. What’s the next step??
Thanks FJE

FJE,

The Wednesday Afternoon Club is the next step. Once enough people are unemployed and available for a meeting on Wed. Afternoon, we will begin the process of REAL change.

Having a common cause bonds Americans together; ask the English.

And speaking of the English, the Revolutionary War wasn’t fought against a foreign enemy, it was fought against our government of that time.

In the mean time, it’s important to vote our incumbent politicians out of office save a few brave souls who are doing their best to tell the truth.

Jobs are disappearing fast and not just in the private sector. There have been massive layoffs in teachers, county and municipal employees as well.

I know 535 people I would like to lay off. They are know as Congress.

Hey Mike! Even worse about the insane profits the oil companies are making is that it is going into managment pockets instead of fixing or upgrading their ancient refineries and other equipment. You just know that they will come begging to the government to help them fix their equipment when it breaksdown. If they had any brains, other than they greedy ones, they would start investing in renewable energy. They are making ads that show them doing all kinds of “great” things to help the environment and find new energy sources but for the most part they are just putting out a smoke screen to cover their usual get richer quicker scemes. I would like to say it was nice to be back from vacation but when I saw gas prices here being 50 cents higher I am not sure. Mexico or Canada are really looking better to me but they are not far enough away from the big mess we are sinking into. You have yourself a nice day Mike!

I love the idea of laying of 535 congresspeople. But then they are lawyers for the most part and that goes to my article today.

As far as fuel goes…we can never look forward often enough and we simply didn’t look at all.

If a renewable were trotted out today that could re-power America, it would be a Herculean feat to replace our current transportation alone.

Planning has not been a requirement thus far and the results for that errant behavior will be in soon.
