Circumstances; One Very Big Word:

Good Morning all of you brilliant minds currently residing out there in reality land; your King of Simple News is on the air.

At the bottom of many investment contracts, stated in extra fine print…or, in blazing speech, following a TV or radio investment advertisement, the words, “Past performance is not a guarantee of future results,” is attempted to be slipped past us.

What are they saying? Have you ever gone fishing and gotten completely skunked, only to have another fisherman say, “You should have been here last week?” What changed to make fishing good last week and nada this week?

When we hear the talking heads say that recessions’ normally last about two years, they are referring to past history and expecting for the earlier period to repeat itself as timely as Old Faithful spews out hot water every 90 minutes. But wait, in 1974, 1989, and 1991, Old Faithful lost its rhythm and ran late. But why?

The word that we are looking for to explain the inaccuracies of historical repeats is “circumstances.” The definition of circumstances was apparently not taught at Harvard, as President Obama is still trying to figure out why jobs continue to be lost. After all, historically, these recessions are short and sweet; and he was very much counting on a historical repeat.

Merriam Webster defines “Circumstances,” as; a condition, fact, or event accompanying, conditioning, or determining another: an essential or inevitable concomitant.

So then, to “normalize,” historical events and to determine the level of probability for those events to repeat themselves, one must first examine the circumstances that surrounded the prior event and then determine whether those same circumstances exist today. More importantly, we must determine whether current circumstances exist that would absolutely prohibit a repeat of history. Uh-oh.

As a simple example, each and every year since the first oil well was drilled in China using bamboo drill stems in 347 A.D., our planet has produced greater and greater quantities of the black gold without fail. Certainly then, an event that has historically repeated for 1662 years is a sure thing to do it again next year; right?

Well, maybe not. A new report out today states that we have reached the end of the yellow brick road for that historical repeat.  here  Ya see, circumstances changed; humans now consume more oil than the earth can produce.

Our current plight is often compared to that of the Great Depression, which is unfortunate, because America has made some staggering changes in circumstances since 1929 that are not being given their just importance.

The Great Depression lasted for some 18 years. From 1929 until the end of WW-II, America was held in the grips of Depression. It is my studied opinion that the Great Depression was brought on (and drug out) by unchecked capitalism and greed (one of the same), combined with poor political decisions; rather than by any actual critical fault in our base society of that time period. But that’s a whole nother subject. The fact remains that the Great Depression did occur and lasted for a very long time.

We are constantly told that safeguards have been put into place to assure that a repeat of the horrors of the Great Depression will never occur again. In other words, the circumstances that surrounded the Depression have been eliminated from any possibility of reoccurring. Has anyone ever explained to you exactly what those safeguards consist of?

While this may seem to be a complex subject, when reduced to Mikeronomics, it really isn’t. The safeguards that were installed are that government is willing to encumber future generations to whatever extent necessary in order for our generation not to suffer from the consequences of own idiotic planning. And that is what all of those who predict a full recovery for me, me, me, are counting on.

The pundits who continually promise a full recovery to our “borrow and spend” past are simply counting on there being no limits to the burden that can be shifted to the innocent bystanders of the future. “Kick the can” isn’t a game; it’s the basis of our entire economic underpinnings!!!

I only wish that planning to grow forever in a finite world was merely idiotic; unfortunately, it’s impossible. But, we wouldn’t want a little thing like facts get in our way.

My opinion remains unchanged in that the United States has reached maximum viable employment. When the artificial stimulus is withdrawn (or reaches its outer limits), the artificial jobs that were created will collapse along with millions of artificial jobs that already existed.

We have reached the limits for our precious resources to support us at the unrealistic population levels and standard of living that we had briefly become accustomed to. The past 40 years of supporting growth by creating a mirror image of debt, in league with vigorous population expansion, has created circumstances that brought our economy to an abrupt halt.

“Circumstances,” is a powerful word.

What is different now than in 1929? Most everything. We have a much larger population gobbling up resources. We have fewer natural resources, they are lower in quality and more expensive to extract and process.

We have less top soil, lots of polluted waterways, we have even succeeded in polluting the oceans. Fisheries around the world are collapsing. Our climate is changing fast and in ways that will make things more difficult.

The US in particular is deeply in debt and we have developed the very bad habit of externalizing costs to the environment and future generations. We have neglected infrastructure at every level and are now too broke to fix it.

The one thing that hasn’t changed is human nature. We continue to be our own worst enemy.

To quote Agent Smith from “The Matrix”

“I’d like to share a revelation that I’ve had during my time here. It came to me when I tried to classify your species and I realized that you’re not actually mammals.
Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with the surrounding environment but you humans do not. You move to an area and you multiply and multiply until every natural resource is consumed and the only way you can survive is to spread to another area.
There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet.”

Now that was prophetic…

Also drawing from “The Matrix” the first construct failed because humans couldn’t survive in a Perfect Utopia. Challenge, struggle, and failure had to be reintroduced into the second construct. Also prophetic. I don’t think humans are so much a virus as our quest for Utopia on Earth will be our doom. What’s the old saying? The Highway to Hell is paved with good intentions?

I saw a program the other day that said the U.S. economy can be expected to be like Europe. The European economy grows at about 1/2 -1 percent a year and unemployment stays at around 10+ percent.

I dunno. I’m not an economist, but if people ain’t working and there are no jobs no one is going to be buying anything. Can I be crowned the queen of simple now? Just kidding.

William Henry,

What prophetic statement, “You [humans] move to an area and you multiply and multiply until every natural resource is consumed and the only way you can survive is to spread to another area.”

This above statement would then beg the question be asked; “What happens when we have spread everywhere?”

Karen,

Your coronation awaits you!

Oh my, the law of unintended consequences.

Over our lifetime, the average American will consume approximately 75% more than our European counterparts. A healthy portion of the European economy is supported by exports to the U.S. in order to feed our consumptive habits.

Now that we no longer have the ability to consume our way to Utopia, unemployment in Europe will rise well above 10% and growth numbers with a plus sign in front of them will be history.

Europe lacks resources and unsettled land mass on which to revive a domestic economy. Stick a fork in ‘em, they’re done.

You can add Japan to the same list and for the same reasons.

Come on, all Citizens of Simple Land, let’s rally around some positive changes we can make today. Let’s prove Agent Smith wrong!

I believe in Gandhi’s, “Be the change you want to see in the world”.

I can’t fight the big bankers or the corrupt politicians today (I’m busy making bread and tapioca pudding), but I can consume thoughtfully in a sustainable way and set that example for my family today.

I learn important lessons from Nature and the critters we have running on our place. Our goats and chickens have free roam of about seven acres. I notice that they take a bite here, a nibble there and keep moving throughout the day. They never denude one area then move on to the next - they will be able to graze this habitat for many, many years without depletion. What an example for us to ponder and emulate.

Choose a simple step today to do your part to create a beautiful and fruitful world.

How about growing some sprouts this winter to add fresh veggies to your diet. Think about the positive change there: 1) You are eating raw, healthy food. 2) You are saving tons of real production cost - no fertilizers, chemicals, long distance trucking, tractor fuel, etc. 3) It is a small step towards self-sufficiency.

I’ll bet our talented group could come up with hundreds of ways to be creators rather than parasites.

Those of us who are waking up to the reality of the seriousness of our situation are in a position to take action, to change the collective intelligence and move away from economic theories that enslave and destroy the middle class folks.
